Burkholderia cepacia complex in Indian cystic fibrosis patients

چکیده
In India, there are no precise reports of the prevalence of Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) infections due to the lack of awareness and difficulty in identification by routine clinical laboratories. In most cases, BCC has been ambiguously reported as nonfermentative Gram-negative bacilli (NFGNB) or simply Pseudomonas spp.1,2. For this reason, reports of disease due to BCC are rare and BCC has been reported from only a few tertiary care centres in north India2-6. BCC is an established pathogen in two patient populations with genetic diseases viz. cystic fibrosis (CF) and chronic granulomatous disease, where it causes increased morbidity and mortality7. Moreover, BCC has become an increasingly common nosocomial pathogen due to its high intrinsic and acquired antimicrobial resistance, lack of effective antibiotics, and survival ability in the environment for prolonged periods of time.

Background and Aim: Cystic fibrosis is a common hereditary and autosomal disorder. One of the factors in cystic fibrosis is Burkholderia cepacia which can be transmitted through the sharing of admitted patients with hospitalized patients. Purpose of this study, was isolation and identification of Burkholderia cepacia from respiratory secretions from Masih Daneshvari Hospital cystic fibrosis...

Background: Complex of Burkholderia cepacia is one of the main and serious causes of infections in cystic fibrosis patients that can be highly transmissible. Small hospital outbreaks are frequent and are usually due to a single contaminated environmental source. The pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) is widely used to identify the strain emission sources in cystic fibrosis patients. The ai...
متن کاملDirect culture-independent Strain typing of Burkholderia cepacia complex in sputum samples from patients with cystic fibrosis.
We examined if multilocus sequence typing (MLST), a method for genotyping and species identification of Burkholderia cepacia complex bacteria, could be applied directly to cystic fibrosis sputum. The redesigned nested-PCR MLST format was successfully used to accurately identify strains in 23 sputum samples, of which 8 were culture negative.
متن کاملIsolation of Burkholderia cepacia by enrichment.
Burkholderia cepacia is a recognised cause of respiratory failure in patients with cystic fibrosis. The value of routine use of selective enrichment broth to increase the yield of B cepacia from cystic fibrosis sputa was investigated. Two hundred sputa from 86 adult and paediatric patients were cultured onto B cepacia selective agar and also in enrichment broth. The enrichment broths were subcu...
متن کاملGenome Sequence of Burkholderia cenocepacia H111, a Cystic Fibrosis Airway Isolate
The Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) is a group of related bacterial species that are commonly isolated from environmental samples. Members of the BCC can cause respiratory infections in cystic fibrosis patients and immunocompromised individuals. We report here the genome sequence of Burkholderia cenocepacia H111, a well-studied model strain of the BCC.
متن کاملDraft Genome Sequences of Burkholderia contaminans, a Burkholderia cepacia Complex Species That Is Increasingly Recovered from Cystic Fibrosis Patients
Burkholderia contaminans belongs to the Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC), a group of bacteria that are ubiquitous in the environment and capable of infecting the immunocompromised and people with cystic fibrosis. We report here draft genome sequences for the B. contaminans type strain LMG 23361 and an Argentinian cystic fibrosis sputum isolate.
